About the Author

PHILLIP M. BOISELLE is Section Chief of Thoracic Imaging, Associate Radiologist-in-Chief of Administrative Affairs of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts and is also an Associate Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Boiselle received his M.D. from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, completed his residency training at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, and obtained his fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. CHARLES S. WHITE is Vice Chairman of Radiology and Professor of Radiology and Medicine, University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. Dr. White received his M.D. From State University of New York, Buffalo, and completed his residency in both Internal Medicine and Radiology from the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York.

Description: Imaging of cardiothoracic disease is rapidly changing. Developing architecture of scanners and increasingly more powerful computer processors allow radiologists to derive more information from the image data set than was previously possible. Evolving surgical and medical therapies lead clinicians to ask new questions. Gating, dual energy and 3-dimensional post processing are some of the options that are increasingly available in the community setting. Although only five years have elapsed since this book's first edition, progress in cardiothoracic imaging over that period makes a new edition appropriate and valuable. As useful as the current edition is, I anticipate additional editions every 4 to 6 years as technology continues to evolve. The current structure of the book is appropriate for such future expansion.
Purpose: The book provides a current guide to cardiothoracic imaging. Evolution of radiologic imaging technology and of the medical and surgical treatment of cardiothoracic diseases has been rapid. This focused book provides timely information on clinical and imaging issues.
Audience: According to the editors, the book is directed at radiologists and practitioners of nuclear medicine, but it is also appropriate for pulmonologists, cardiologists, and surgeons. They have succeeded. The editors are highly regarded authorities in cardiothoracic imaging.
Features: The editors have wisely chosen to organize information both along organ systems and by technique. Although organ system subspecialization is increasingly common in radiology, it is helpful to have the technical issues addressed directly and concisely as well as from the perspective of evaluating a particular anatomic region or elucidating a specific disease. Chapters on multislice CT scanners, PET/CT, functional MR, and digital radiography provide specific and focused technical information. Chapters on cardiac CT and MRI, aortic imaging, HRCT, and radiofrequency ablation of tumors are both introductions and a review of pertinent concerns for those who wish to begin to perform these procedures or to increase the sophistication of their current approach. Specific chapters focus on classic clinical problems such as diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, evaluation of the solitary pulmonary nodule, and lung cancer screening, all highly applicable to the daily practice of radiology. I particularly appreciate the chapter on functional imaging of the trachea and bronchi using multidetector CT scanners. The author (one of the editors) presents a convincing argument that tracheobronchmalacia is a treatable disease which is underrecognized. Its protean manifestations lead it to mimic a variety of other conditions which has probably contributed to underdiagnosis.
Assessment: This small book is a valuable resource for technical and imaging information. Evolution of scanner architecture and of medical and surgical therapies makes a new edition appropriate. The editors and the authors, recognized experts in the areas they address, are to be congratulated on successfully accomplishing their goals. Among new topics that might be included in future editions are ablation of ectopic foci in pulmonary veins, the quantification of emphysema using minimal intensity projection images, and merging of functional and anatomic information into composite images.
