Overview

New York City Boxing Directory (1885-1960) was compiled from countless pages of New York City directories and U.S. Censuses from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Readers and reference enthusiasts may use the eBook to delve into additional family research. Address information is useful for tracking down old neighborhoods, businesses, and where deceased individuals lived. Especially prominent in the text are names of Jewish, Irish, and Italian men who worked as boxers, boxing instructors, promoters, and gym operators. Also compiled in the directory are addresses of former boxing periodicals and pugilist organizations. I think that many promoters I have included likely worked in theatrical productions as well as sports. Names included in the eBook are from all boroughs of New York City, i.e. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The homes of promoters were sometimes in New Jersey, Connecticut, and even California. I hope that libraries will consider including my directory as a helpful resource for their patrons. It will certainly save users much time and effort in their own research.
