About the Author

Mike Martin is an RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology. He runs his own Veterinary Cardiorespiratory Centre in England.

Brendan Corcoran is a Senior Lecturer and Director of the Hospital for Small Animals at the University of Edinburgh, Royal (Dick) School for Veterinary Studies.

Description: This book provides a thorough overview of cardiorespiratory conditions and diseases of the dog and cat, including pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment, written in a clear and concise note-based style. The prior edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an updated, concise, and easy to read reference for common cardiorespiratory conditions and diseases useful to practicing veterinarians. This book provides a detailed review in an easily accessible style. It is a good reference for a practicing veterinarian.
Audience: According to the author, this book is written for veterinary practitioners and students. It will be useful for general practitioners, students, and interns and may be a good review for internal medicine residents. The authors are credible authorities on cardiorespiratory diseases.
Features: The book covers basic and some advanced diagnostics that may be performed to assess cardiorespiratory diseases. The common respiratory and cardiac diseases are discussed in separate chapters pertaining to the component of the system involved or the specific disease. The book classifies heart failure, arrhythmias, episodic weakness and collapse, cough/dyspnea/tachypnea as syndromes and discusses each in a separate chapter. Detailed lists of differential diagnoses are presented for multiple clinical cardiorespiratory conditions. Throughout the book, the authors provide highlighted boxes with hints or suggestions that have been helpful during their experience with cardiorespiratory disease. The inclusion of congenital cardiac diseases in a list format is very helpful. The book is organized in a way that makes it easy to read, but allows a great deal of material to be covered in a few pages. The echocardiogram chapter is detailed with informative illustrations and an excellent description of the process involved in echocardiography. The appendix is a helpful reference for drug dosages including a lidocaine constant rate infusion and digoxin. The book provides an adequate amount of information regarding drug therapy throughout, including dosages. In the chapter on electrocardiograms, there are descriptions of abnormal ECGs, but no illustrations. It would be helpful to have an illustration of abnormal ECG tracings. Some of the drug names and terms used are common in England and may be not be familiar to U.S readers. References are provided at the end of the book, but they are not cited in the text.
Assessment: This is a valuable reference that is detailed, accurate, and easy to read. The note-based format allows the reader to obtain information in a short amount of time. This is a unique book. In the 10 years since the first edition was published, there have been many changes in the diagnostic capabilities and treatment recommendations for cardiopulmonary disease, which justifies the need for the second edition.
