This book provides a broad spectrum of scientific principles and applications of novel drug delivery technologies in areas such as niosomes, pharmacosomes, liquid crystal systems, nanotechnology, and more. The authors reference original research articles and focus on a scientific perspective in their discussions.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the scientific principles for and applications of novel drug delivery systems in an organized and concise manner. A systematic review of current developments in drug delivery systems is very useful.
Audience: The target audience includes scientists, graduate students, medical practitioners, and pharmacists. Anyone interested in learning about current developments in drug delivery technology will find this a useful reference.
Features: The first chapter offers a concise but informative discussion of the role of novel drug delivery systems in improving therapeutic outcomes in certain conditions. A concise chapter on the application of nanotechnology to drug delivery systems is informative. Every chapter begins with an abstract, but only some chapters include key terms. It would have been helpful if every chapter had key words. Illustration quality could have been a lot better. It is unclear the purpose of the 10 sections; the book would have been better organized by grouping the chapters into focused sections. Readers also might be disappointed at the lack of sufficient examples with discussions about existing technologies that are clinically relevant. In addition, a separate chapter on tissue engineering and novel drug delivery systems would have been useful. Finally, the book needs copyediting.
Assessment: This is a concise overview of the cutting-edge research being done in drug delivery. Development of novel drug delivery systems requires an integration of basic and applied science principles, and this book can serve as a handy reference on the scientific perspectives of novel drug delivery systems. This book could be outstanding if the chapter contents were selected and organized more carefully. It would have been more interesting and informative if every chapter provided specific examples of the products developed based on the delivery system discussed in that chapter. As this is the first edition, there is hope that it will improve significantly in its next edition.
