Overview

The Exemplary Novels published in 1613 constitute, according to the same author, the first short stories in Spanish literature. In this volume we include three of the best known. In Rinconete y Cortadillo Cervantes approaches the picaresque genre and shows, with irony and humor, the world of the Sevillian underworld in the 16th century. Byzantine novel, The English Spaniard tells the story of love and adventures of Isabela, kidnapped in Cádiz at the age of seven and educated in England, and Ricaredo, captured by the Turks. Finally, El Licenciado Vidriera tells the story of a young man who suffers a spell and becomes obsessed with the idea that it is made of glass.

About the Author

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a poet, novelist and playwright. He is considered one of the greatest figures in Spanish literature for his work Don Quixote de la Mancha, which many critics have described as the first modern novel and one of the best works of universal literature. Other of his works are Exemplary Novels (1613), Journey of Parnassus (1614), Eight Comedies and Eight Entremés (1615) and his posthumous work The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda (1617), in whose dedication he says goodbye to his readers.
