Description: This is an update of a general pediatric nursing textbook previously published in 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the nursing skills and knowledge needed to care for a spectrum of pediatric healthcare problems. A comprehensive pediatric nursing textbook will always be necessary for nursing programs, and this book meets that need.
Audience: The authors state that the book is written in easy to read terms to accommodate students for whom English is a second language, and that it is geared toward shorter, focused nursing courses. However, I did not find the language very different from other textbooks for nursing students, although there are some additional explanations. S. R. James is associate professor in nursing and J. W. Ashwill is director of undergrad services at University of Texas Arlington School of Nursing.
Features: The book covers normal growth and development, special considerations for working with pediatrics, and nursing care of children with body system alterations. Each section includes highlights, important information for parents/families, care plans, and a reference/reading list. Illustrations and color pictures are used effectively. The tables that spell out the differences between pediatric and adult pathophysiology, and the Critical to Remember boxes are very useful. The CD that comes with the book contains video clips, animations, and NCLEX review questions to round out the material. The video clips are very basic, but the animations provide useful visual explanations of concepts and conditions.
Assessment: Another major textbook in this area, Wong's Nursing Care of Infants and Children, 8th edition, Hockenberry and Wilson (Elsevier, 2007), has more in-depth pathophysiology along with a more conceptual focus. The authors of this book have expanded the legal, ethical, and cultural sections, and include more information focusing on caring for pediatric clients in community settings. They also include occasional sections that focus on using research to improve practice, which may help demonstrate how to use evidence in practice. Given that the previous version is five years old, this update is justified.
