Description: The book offers readers an overview of the current issues and trends that are deemed basic to the nursing professional, with nursing students serving as the primary intended audience. This updates the seventh edition (2015).
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to serve as a primer for graduates of nursing programs by offering a synthesis of the rapidly transformational changes in health care. Major shifts in the recent political landscape, including demographic shifts and the ongoing debates over the Affordable Care Act, are included in the updated objectives of this simple, easy-to-read book.
Audience: The primary target audience is nursing students, as the book serves as an introduction to the current state of the nursing profession and its role in the ever-changing healthcare environment. This reviewer believes the book is most appropriately suited for undergraduate nursing students and the novice-level professional nurse. This book can be used at different points in the undergraduate curriculum for discussions surrounding concepts such as leadership and management, principles of ethics, and law as they relate to nursing, and role transition from student to professional nurse.
