Description: This book covers almost every medication that anyone might ever administer to a patient or client. It includes all the information about "the drug" including potential adverse effects, interactions, dosages, and what it is used for. It is very straightforward and looks like most of the other drug handbooks. This book does have colored images of common medications for identification purposes.
Purpose: According to the authors, this book is intended to provide the most current and relevant information that practicing nurses and students need to know to safely administer medications to patients and clients. It is a worthy objective, but nurses AND students today are using computer-based systems for the same information. They are not using books. This book does come in app form.
Audience: The book states in the title that it is for nurses and, coincidentally, nursing students can use it. I think any healthcare professional could use it including PAs, APRNs, physicians, etc. It is interesting to note that 22 of the contributors are PharmDs and there is only one nurse who is a clinical consultant. If this book is intended for nurses, it should be written by nurses with consulting PharmDs. Yes, PharmDs know about medications, but nurses know about nursing considerations and nursing interventions.
Features: The title is clear in its description of the contents and who the book is for. The best aspects of this book include black box warnings, drug monographs that all have the same format, an appendix for antidotes, an appendix for common combination drugs, an appendix for monitoring guidelines, and an appendix for pediatric drugs that are commonly involved in drug errors. These features are unique. Additionally, each drug monograph is in alphabetical order so readers can easily find the drug.
Assessment: All the information in this book can be obtained from the internet, an ebook, and even the app. It might be handy as a reference book, but I do not see nurses or student nurses using this book for medication administration. Nursing students may use it for drug cards in clinical, but in the hospital or clinic, the information is available on the computer. I don't know why these books are still made.
