This book focuses on the nutrients and nutraceuticals that promote active and healthy ageing – recently defined by the WHO as the process of development and maintenance of functional capacity that allows well-being at an advanced stage of life. There has been a rapid rise in the use of nutritional interventions as well as specific nutraceuticals in the management of multifactorial aspects of clinical health outcomes. Written by leading experts this book comprehensively discusses the various ageing phenotypes and age-related diseases. It also assesses the nutritional status of the elderly and the various epidemiological factors that influence it. It reviews the role of dietary fiber in disease-free and fully functional ageing. Further, the book explores the benefits of polyphenols, which are secondary plant metabolites, in protecting against cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and various neurodegenerative diseases.

About the Author

Seyed Mohammad Nabavi is a Biotechnologist and Senior Scientist at the Applied Biotechnology Research Centre, Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. His research interests chiefly focus on natural products. He has authored/co-authored over 250 publications in ISI-indexed international journals, and more than 10 books.

Grazia D’Onofrio is a Clinical Psychology Service, Health Department, Fondazione IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. In 2009, she was awarded the title of Expert in Integrated Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Her research interests include various aspects of dementia, psychological and behavioral symptoms, and multidimensional impairment. She has authored numerous book chapters and scientific articles published in respected international journals. Currently, she is an Editorial Board member for several international journals and is engaged in various international projects, including European and Japanese-European projects (Horizon 2020) on the development of technological systems to promote healthy and active aging.

Seyed Fazel Nabavi is a Biotechnologist and Senior Scientist at the Applied Biotechnology Research Centre, Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. His research interests chiefly focus on natural products. He has authored/co-authored over 200 publications in ISI-indexed international journals, and more than 5 books.

Description: At first glance, you would expect this book to be a practical tool for healthcare providers and individuals when working with individuals to promote healthy aging with preventive measures. However, this text focuses on 12 concepts within individual chapters. Honestly, each "chapter" reads like a journal article giving an overview of their respective topics. Each does not delve too deep into the topic, but gives a superficial report on the topic, covering the items the authors feel is important. Initially thumbing through the text, nothing really stands out as unique. There is no preface or introduction to tie the volume together, so each chapter really stands alone.
Purpose: Since the editors chose not to give an introduction or preface, there is no insight into their thoughts regarding the book's purpose. But, looking at the chapter topics, its purpose appears to be focusing on nutrition factors that can lead to healthy aging. While healthy aging is a hot topic, many books have already been written on this subject, so I am inclined to say this may not be a very worthy objective.
Audience: Again, without insight into the editors' thoughts regarding who they feel is the audience, I can only presume they were hoping for a broad audience. However, I feel it is not useful for students or practicing health professionals. The book is edited by three individuals, two from Iran who have a research interest in "natural products" and one from Italy whose research interests include dementia and "psychological and behavioral systems." There is nothing about the chapter contributors themselves, with the exception of where they work, so it is difficult to surmise their credibility.
Features: The book includes 12 topics that are covered in individual chapters. Each chapter includes an abstract, key words, an introduction, a body of text covering that topic, a conclusion, and references. The book follows typical topics that have been covered previously for healthy aging: fiber, role of health in prevention, functional foods, etc. However, it is more superficial than other textbooks. The order of topics seems a little disorganized and the chapters do not follow a natural flow, making it harder to read in succession. All of the chapters, except fiber and aging, include tables and figures, but it would have been much nicer to see "key learnings" or consensus summaries to make the book more useful to a larger audience.
Assessment: The role of health in aging is an important topic. This book may have use to researchers but there are more updated options available.
