This book provides diagnosis-specific guidelines on the nutrition management of a wide scope of conditions. Each of more than 275 diagnoses, grouped into one of 16 sections, is covered in a one-to-three page segment with a concise description of the condition, followed by clinical objectives, nutrition recommendations, a patient profile or list of assessment parameters, common drug interactions, and patient education plans. The book makes no pretense that it is presenting a comprehensive survey of clinical nutrition. It is, according to the author's preface, intended to supplement other texts and reference books and to assist clinicians in the expedient assimilation and implementation of medical nutrition therapy. It will be a valuable addition to the libraries of nutrition practitioners across the continuum of care, with its at-your-fingertips guidance on a wide range of clinical nutrition situations. Highly specialized practitioners are less likely to use it on a regular basis. The structure of the text, with its step-by-step plans of care, nicely parallels the needs of our priority-driven healthcare environment. Nutrition acuity levels are assigned to each diagnosis to inform the user of the critical nature of nutrition intervention. References are updated from the 1992 edition, consistently citing renowned works in the field and including many of the highly credible position papers of the American Dietetic Association. Appendixes include listings of DRGs and ICD-9 codes and case studies for multi-condition patients, and purposely omit lengthy food composition tables that can be found elsewhere. The book works very well as a desktop manual with its spiral binding. This bookprovides a modern approach to the nutrition care of a broad spectrum of conditions. This systematic guide is well-suited to the clinician who already has a general understanding of nutrition principles and is required to meet the nutrition care needs of a diverse population.
