Description: This book reviews the care of women with kidney disease. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field and encompasses many areas including hypertension, fluid and electrolyte disorders, chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplant involving the pregnant patient.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference for the care of pregnant patients with a variety of renal conditions. The care of women with kidney disease has evolved tremendously over the past several years and is worthy of this well-written reference.
Audience: The book is written for the those involved in the care of female patients with kidney disease. Therefore, providers in nephrology and obstetrics will find the book useful. The chapters are written by expert contributors in the field and the main authors, who are part of a subspecialty group managing such patients in their own clinic, provide overview.
Features: The book is divided into 18 chapters, written by 40 contributors. After a description of renal physiology, several following chapters review common renal complications and management strategies during pregnancy. Subsequent chapters provide an overview of the management of CKD, dialysis, and transplantation during pregnancy. Contraception, pharmacologic considerations, and nutrition are reviewed, followed by a brief summary of bone health in women with kidney disease. Each chapter has well-defined sections, figures and tables are well done and enhance the text, and lastly, each chapter provides a conclusion statement followed by a list of references. An electronic version and section for questions and answers would enhance the book.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference for those involved in the care of women with kidney disease. The formation of this subspecialty is admirable and can hopefully be duplicated at institutions across the globe. For now, this book will provide a very useful tool for nephrologists and particularly trainees in nephrology and obstetrics.
