Description: This book provides a general understanding about sensory integration, as well as methods to assess and treat a variety of problems.
Purpose: The intent is to educate occupational therapists and others working with children about sensory integrative problems that can encompass sensory, cognitive, and/or motor tasks.
Audience: Although occupational therapists and others working with children with special needs are considered the main audience, sections of the book can be especially helpful to parents. Descriptions throughout are clear and easy to understand.
Features: This book provides general information related to sensory integration, assessment, and treatment methods. The author presents the material in a manner that is useful for entry-level therapists. There are sufficient illustrations which support descriptions of treatment techniques throughout. Additional supplemental reference material is incorporated to enhance concepts. A number of helpful checklists, treatment activities, and dietary considerations are covered in the Appendix.
Assessment: I feel this book provides a good framework for understanding the needs that exist when working with children with special needs. The author does a nice job determining what parents might want to know and providing descriptions in very concise terms. The easy-to-understand descriptions and explanations make this book very desirable to entry-level occupational therapists working with children. It is especially helpful when combined with others that give an overview of various frames of reference.
