This is the first major collection of important early American drama to appear in a generation. Meserve (A Chronological Outline of World Theatre, Feedback Theatre, 1996) has assembled a collection of 12 plays, from The Contrast (1787) to The Girl of the Golden West (1905). His intent is to present plays showing American themes, attitudes, or even taste. While theater was popular in this period, the shadow of European drama loomed large over American stages. These plays are part of the long struggle to find an American voice. About half of them are what readers might expect from such an anthology. Among the rest are some wonderful surprises, including the complete text of Metamora (1829), The Stage Struck Yankee (1840), and A Trip to Chinatown (1891), among others. With room for just a dozen pieces, this book may miss your favorite author of this period. But until a university press brings out a uniform, multivolume edition of major early American drama with substantial editorial support, this excellent collection is greatly welcome.-Thomas E.
