Overview

Practical tips and advice for parents navigating the school system from a mom who's been there.

One in five children have dyslexia, but too many parents feel isolated and defeated in their efforts to secure an equal chance for their children. After fighting the school system for four years to get the correct diagnoses and proper learning assistance for her two dyslexic sons, Micki Boas realized that parents need to hack the system, cutting through the invisible red tape of school funding, IEPs, specialized teacher training, and more.

Drawing on insights from over 200 parents, educators, and experts, Boas delves into:
-When children need to be diagnosed to get the help they need-and why it doesn't always happen
-What special education programs are mandated by law-and why most schools fail to provide them
-What parents can do to advocate for their children-and help change the larger system

One in Five shares the secrets the “professionals” won't tell you-but that makes all the difference.

Library Journal

According to entrepreneur and strategist Boas, one in five Americans have dyslexia. This highly readable and deeply personal book is chock-full of helpful hints, gleaned from the author's protracted and exasperating experiences seeking screening and educational support for her eldest son. As Boas points out, "true educational equality doesn't exist for those who learn differently." She explains in excruciating detail the difficulties and setbacks the Boas' faced before finding the perfect school for their son. Readers will appreciate stories of the challenges faced by other families in similar circumstances. The author also provides possible solutions to limited funding, delayed intervention, and the dearth of specialized educator training. In the epilog, she discusses the family's efforts to support the learning needs of their younger son. Boas is a stoic advocate for her children and generously dispenses the solid, practical information she wishes she had known from the outset. VERDICT Highly recommended for families with children with unique learning styles.—Elizabeth Connor, Daniel Lib., The Citadel, Military Coll. of South Carolina, Charleston
