Overview

Learning at a distance and learning online are growing in scale and importance in higher education, presenting opportunities for large scale, inclusive, flexible and engaging learning. These modes of learning swept the world in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The many challenges of providing effective education online and remotely have been acknowledged, particularly by those who rapidly jumped into online and distance education during the crisis.

This volume, edited by the University of London’s Centre for Online and Distance Education, addresses the practice and theory of online and distance education, building on knowledge and expertise developed in the University over some 150 years. The University is currently providing distance transnational education to around 50,000 students in more than 180 countries around the world. Throughout the book, contributors explore important principles and highlight successful practices in areas including course design and pedagogy, online assessment, open education, inclusive practice, and enabling student voice. Case studies illustrate prominent issues and approaches. Together, the chapters offer current and future leaders and practitioners a practical, productive, practice- and theory-informed account of the present and likely future state of online and distance higher education worldwide.

About the Author

Linda Amrane-Cooper is head of the Centre for Online and Distance Education at the University of London, and Director of Academic Practice in Distance Education.

David Baume is an independent researcher, evaluator, consultant, developer and writer in the field of international educational development.

Stephen Brown is Emeritus Professor of Learning Technologies and former Head of the School of Media and Communication at De Montfort University.

Stylianos Hatzipanagos is Fellow and Executive Lead for Research and Scholarship at the University of London's Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE).

Philip Powell is Director, Business School for the Creative Industries, University for the Creative Arts, where he is Professor of Creative Business.

Sarah Sherman is the Director of the Bloomsbury Learning Exchange, a cross-institutional centre for sharing effective practice in digital education.

Alan Tait is Emeritus Professor of Distance Education and Development at the Open University, UK.


Linda Amrane-Cooper is head of the Centre for Online and Distance Education at the University of London, and Director of Academic Practice in Distance Education. Prior to joining the University of London, she was Dean and Head of Glasgow Caledonian University’s London campus and Dean of the Royal Docks Business School at the University of East London. She moved into the Business discipline after a long career in Education and Social Science, where roles included Associate Dean of Education and International Lead, and Head of Initial Teacher Training. She has benefited from the opportunity to work across the UK HE sector in a wide range of Universities and teach at all levels, both face to face and online. Linda has taken an active role supporting the professional development of HE staff as an education developer, mentor and coach.
David Baume is an independent researcher, evaluator, consultant, developer and writer in the field of international educational development. He was founding Chair of the UK Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA); co-founder of the UK Heads of Educational Development Group (HEDG); a founding council member of the International Consortium for Educational Development (ICED); and founding editor of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD). He was previously a Director of the Centre for Higher Education Practice at the UK Open University. There, he led the production of courses on teaching in higher education; taught on the University’s Leadership Development Programme; researched the assessment of teaching portfolios; founded and led the University Teaching Awards scheme; and supported educational development projects for the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP) and Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL). David has worked on learning technology projects with Jisc.
Stephen Brown is Emeritus Professor of Learning Technologies and former Head of the School of Media and Communication at De Montfort University. He has been Senior Technology Adviser at the JISC Technologies Centre, Head of Distance Learning at BT, Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Engineering Design, and President of the Association for Learning Technology. He has also been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and an Associate Member of the Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors. Since 2005, he has been a registered European Commission research expert in the fields of Technology Enhanced Learning, Digital Libraries and Cultural Heritage. He was a member of the AHRC Peer Review College for ten years.
Stylianos Hatzipanagos is Fellow and Executive Lead for Research and Scholarship at the University of London's Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE). He has held leadership roles in research-led and modern universities, in hybrid and distance learning contexts. His research and scholarship portfolio includes: learning design and evaluation of online learning environments, formative and online assessment, computer supported collaborative work, open, flexible and distance education, digital literacies, social media and social networks in an educational context. He has led and participated in research projects at international (EU- Digital competences and social inclusion, Lifelong learning, eLearning professional training and Minerva programmes) and national (HEA, JISC) level. He has been the recipient of four of the CODE Teaching and Research awards.
Philip Powell is Director, Business School for the Creative Industries, University for the Creative Arts, where he is Professor of Creative Business. Previously he was Executive Dean, School of Business, Economics and Informatics Birkbeck, University of London and Pro Vice-Master, Enterprise and Innovation. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, of the Academy of Social Sciences, of the HEA and is a Senior Scholar of the Association of Information Systems. He was president of the UK Academy for Information Systems.
Sarah Sherman is the Director of the Bloomsbury Learning Exchange, a cross-institutional centre for sharing effective practice in digital education. She is responsible for managing the coordination, implementation and development of Technology Enhanced Learning across the BLE partners, helping to support the use of the Virtual Learning Environment and associated technologies, such as lecture capture and web conferencing software. She is involved in supporting staff develop skills in the use of learning technologies. As co-author of the Get Interactive MOOC, she has first-hand experience of designing, developing and launching a course to support teaching staff acquire practical skills in learning technology within a pedagogic framework.
Alan Tait is Emeritus Professor of Distance Education and Development at the Open University UK. From 2013-2015 he was Director of International Development and Teacher Education, and before that was Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the Open University UK 2007-2012, and from 2004-2007 Dean of the Faculty of Education and Language Studies. Alan was Editor of the European Journal of Distance and E Learning (EURODL) 2005-2013, was from 1989-1998 Editor of Open Learning, was President of the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) from 2007-2010, and Co-Director of the Cambridge International Conference on Open and Distance Learning 1988-2013.
