About the Author

Tom Williams has over thirty years experience as an operating department practitioner. He is currently a freelance clinical and teaching practitioner.

Brian Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Continuing Professional Development at the Edge Hill College of Higher Education, Liverpool.

Description: This book is an alphabetical listing of approved abbreviations related to operating department practice, followed by a glossary of terms. However, this second edition has expanded the coverage to terminology used outside the operating room.
Purpose: The purpose is to present "medical, scientific and technical terms" used by healthcare professionals, but not limited to those related to the operating room.
Audience: The book is intended for those working in the operating room as well as other healthcare professionals. It would be a quick reference for use in the operating room and for students in nursing and related fields. One author has 30 years of experience in the operating room and the other teaches in continuing professional development.
Features: This reference starts with an alphabetical list of terms that are generally defined (quick reference), followed by a section of more detailed definitions. The title is somewhat misleading, suggesting that the book is about operating room practice, not just terminology.
Assessment: This second edition contains more terms and appeals to a wider audience. However, it would not meet the needs of most healthcare professionals.
