Description: This is the second edition of an introductory book covering basic principles and surgical techniques for the most common elective orthopedic surgery procedures. Chapters end with review questions for self-testing. The book does not cover any procedures related to orthopedic trauma or fracture care. The first edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a general overview of commonly performed orthopedic procedures as well as a resource for preparation for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) exam in the U.K. The objectives are worthy, and the book does successfully review introductory principles and abbreviated surgical techniques. However, I am unable to comment on its utility in preparation for the FRCS exam, since all my experience is in the U.S. and Canada.
Audience: This 506-page book is written primarily for residents and attempts to fill a niche as an introduction to elective orthopedic procedures.
Features: It covers most of the common elective orthopedic procedures and is organized primarily by anatomic region. It includes chapters on peripheral nerve surgery, limb reconstruction, and amputations. Topics are very well organized, addressing indications/contraindications, risks, procedure planning, patient positioning, abbreviated surgical technique, and postoperative care for each procedure. The procedures span all orthopedic subspecialties. The book is not designed to provide complete step-by-step descriptions of each procedure. One chapter covers anesthesia in orthopedic surgery, a topic that is rarely covered in orthopedic books. While the book covers some less commonly performed procedures (e.g., arthrodesis of the knee and hip), it would have been helpful if it had also covered some additional topics, such as allografts and quad tendon autografts for ACL reconstruction, anterolateral approach to the hip, and high tibial osteotomies, for instance.
Assessment: This book is written by orthopedic surgeons in the U.K. for U.K. trainees. My training was in North America, so my comments relate to its potential use in North America. This book is most germane to orthopedists in-training, particularly for residents rotating through the different orthopedic services for the first time. It would also be useful as a review of procedures for more experienced residents, fellows, or attending (consultant) surgeons.
