About the Author

Al Lens began his ophthalmic career in 1986 at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His keen interest in learning and teaching put him in the position of training ophthalmic assistants. After writing The Ophthalmic Assistant Guide, Al began lecturing across North America at various conferences. His teaching has taken him as far away as Saudi Arabia. He is author of LASIK for Technicians and coauthor of Ocular Anatomy and Physiology and Cataracts and Glaucoma. The latter 2 publications are part of The Basic Bookshelf for Eyecare Professionals Series.

Description: This book, part of a series geared towards providing fundamental education in eye care, instructs the eye care professional on how to determine a patient's refractive prescription.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the necessary background optical knowledge and instructions on how to use the various instruments to determine refractive error. This book fills an important need because there are few currently available on this subject. The author has done a commendable job of providing education in this area.
Audience: The book is written at an appropriate level for all ophthalmic technicians and students. The author has a great deal of experience in the art of refracting the eye.
Features: A discussion of basic optics and how they relate to refractive error begins the book. This is vital information that will be needed to properly refract a patient. A new section on wavefront is included with this section. Next is instruction on use of the retinoscope, which provides objective information to determine refractive error. Nothing can replace actual experience or practice with the instrument, but this book does an outstanding job of describing the various steps and principles. The majority of the book is dedicated to the most important part, putting it all together with the refractor. The refractor is the final element that will provide the patient with a refractive prescription. This book goes through the process in a step by step fashion. However, it only describes refracting basic or routine situations. Nevertheless, it does a good job of discussing the process through the use of text, black-and-white pictures and graphs. Each chapter begins with key points that summarize what will be learned and contains a section that provides important tips to make the process easier and more accurate. Included at the end of the book are useful case studies of various situations which help facilitate the learning process.
Assessment: This second edition incorporates new technologies and is therefore an important addition. It is an excellent learning guide for ancillary personnel involved in providing cursory refractive procedures. It does not replace actual experience but will facilitate the learning process for beginning students.
