Description: This edition of a comprehensive book of oral and maxillofacial pathology is a vast improvement over the 2003 edition in terms of illustrations, diagrams, and tables.
Purpose: The authors attempt to combine a comprehensive reference with a teaching text for students. There is always a need for such a utopian result, but most attempts fall short in one or more areas. This book comes close, and if it has a shortcoming, it is the insufficiency of detail wanted and needed by specialists in the field.
Audience: The book is very well suited for dental students and practicing dentists, but it would be of limited usefulness for specialists in oral or surgical pathology. The authors fail to provide sufficient detail for these groups, despite the fact that they are top scholars in the field.
Features: The book has retained its tried and true format as a complete text of the subject. The first chapter is a superb clinical review of oral lesions. The remainder of the book is divided into chapters based on various categories of related disorders. The new diagrams and charts are a wonderful addition.
Assessment: This is a valuable book for use in dental schools. It is probably overkill for dental hygienists and insufficient for dental specialists.
