Adrian Becker is a Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem, Israel. This book is designed for any dental professional who has patients with impacted teeth. The purpose is to demonstrate step-by-step how to uncover, activate, and level impacted teeth. It is a very useful book to any individual who has an orthodontic or oral surgery background. It can be used by anyone—student or seasoned clinician—who does not have everyday experience with impacted teeth. Since impacted teeth are common, I feel that the subject matter is worthy of its own text. Illustrations are conservative and straightforward. Although thorough, they do not indicate many of the newer appliances that are made out of nickel titanium. Photos often lack sequential photos to indicate time lapsed results. References are oftentimes old, but accurate. One of the best written chapters is the one that reviews diagnoses of impacted teeth. The index is both concise and accurate. This is a good book for the library. If a practitioner has questions it is easily accessible. Overall, the content is well thought out and displayed.

Description: This is the second edition of a comprehensive book on the orthodontic management of impacted and unerupted teeth. The author reviews and stresses the relevant elements of dental growth and development, traditional and CT/conebeam radiology, and biomechanics. He emphasizes the need for recognition of the uniqueness of each clinical situation and the need for analysis, design, and fabrication of the appropriate appliance. The book is well organized into clinical topics by chapter. The first edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The author provides the information necessary for the diagnosis, treatment planning, treatment and prognosis of the most frequently impacted teeth. This book is informative and well written. It meets the author's objectives for the successful diagnosis and treatment of unerupted teeth.
Audience: It would be most useful for orthodontists and orthodontic residents. The general dentist and oral surgeon would also benefit from the book, particularly from the extensive diagnostic material included with each clinical problem. Collaboration among the various dental specialties is addressed and should result in enhanced coordination of care of the patient with impacted tooth. The author is a recognized expert and scholar in this area. The book is an authoritative addition to the dental literature.
Features: This book covers the range of information from principles of diagnosis to a manual like approach to the treatment of specific impacted teeth. There is good balance among diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment. The glossary and table of contents are well organized and make finding solutions to specific problems a relatively easy matter. This is an up-to-date, modern book that incorporates recent advances such as cone beam tomography and implants as adjuncts to treatment. A few illustrations show dated appliances but in general the illustrations are current, informative, and useful. This is an excellent text. It is informative, well written, and addresses a topic not often thoroughly covered in orthodontic training programs. I recommend it highly as an important addition to the orthodontist's personal library. It would also be a fine template for a course in orthodontic management of impacted teeth.
Assessment: The addition of new technologies certainly justifies this second edition. These technologies, advanced 3D radiographic techniques, and temporary implants for anchorage, were not widely available at the time of publication of the first edition. Perhaps one of the most useful aspects of the book is the review of the biology of tooth eruption and the use of this information in developing the treatment plan, which might involve sophisticated mechanics, or no need for mechanics at all. This is book that will greatly enhance the proper management of impacted teeth.
