Description: This book details a practical, integrated, and modern approach to orthopedic pathology. It covers bone tumors as well as other diseases, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, trauma, and osteomyelitis, which are either not included or covered only in an abbreviated form in other books of orthopedic pathology. The book is well illustrated, with numerous radiographs as well as full color gross and microscopic images.
Purpose: The author's purpose was to relate his own experience gathered over more than 30 years and thus demonstrate how the understanding of pathology can improve the diagnostics and treatment of patients with orthopedic diseases. He has achieved his goal and has considerably improved upon the first edition.
Audience: This book is unique in that it is written for practicing pathologists, radiologists, and surgeons who deal with patients with neoplastic and non-neoplastic bone disease. Residents, fellows, and attendings can use this book to integrate their own knowledge with that of the other specialties.
Features: The book's 18 chapters are further subdivided into specific sections covering both normal and pathologic states. The first chapter describes the basic structure and function of the bone. The second chapter discusses calcification, ossification, fractures, and child abuse. Metabolic bone disease is the subject of the third and fourth chapters. Chapter five is dedicated to osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, chapter six describes bone cysts and giant cell tumors, and chapter seven is dedicated to the periosteum and periosteal tumors. Chapters eight through 13 cover tumors and tumor-like conditions of bone, cartilage, vessels, mesenchyme, and metastases. Chapter 14 discusses osteonecrosis, chapter 15 covers the synovium and common deposits as well as synovial tumors, and chapter 16 is dedicated to arthritis and the detailed pathobiology of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Implant pathology including implant materials, infections, and sarcomas is the subject of chapter 17, and chapter 18 discusses soft tissue pathology. Appendixes cover special techniques, classification systems, and tissue banking. A list of references and a very useful index are provided at the end of the book. The radiographs are detailed enough and the microscopic images are above average and informative. However, the real value of the book lies in the gross photographs. These images are unrivaled in their color, sharpness, and overall professional appearance.
Assessment: This is a single-authored book with contributions from radiologists who worked with the author. Based on the author's 30 years of experience, the book includes case material that is hard to match. These clinical cases are explained in the context of basic science data to emphasize the significance of pathology and other basic sciences for the full understanding of clinical presentations. The author is conversant with both pathology and clinical aspects of orthopedic diseases, demonstrating a profound understanding of the clinical, radiologic, and morphologic features of bone and joint diseases. The text is written concisely in simple, declarative sentences and the in-depth approach is fully understandable. The book covers virtually all diagnostic problems that pathologists may encounter in everyday practice. It outlines the key features of non-neoplastic and neoplastic bone and joint disease. The emphasis is on important diagnostic features and the underlying pathogenesis, the appropriate use of ancillary techniques, and correlation with radiographic and clinical findings. The excellent color illustrations are carefully chosen to complement the text and demonstrate the most characteristic features of described entities as well as their variants. The diagrams help convey the cellular mechanisms of the entity. The references are modern, well chosen, and include pathology, radiology, and surgical journals. Of note, the entire contents and images are available online. The online text is easy to read and navigate and the images are easily and quickly enlarged in a new window. The book deserves to be widely read and I recommend it most enthusiastically. It belongs in the working libraries of all surgical pathologists, radiologists, and orthopedic surgeons. It should also be available to residents and fellows and deserves to be on the shelves of departmental and hospital libraries.
