Gr 6 Up--Despite the subtitle, MacNee's rogues' gallery extends back to Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, whose brief but colorful career ended with decapitation in 1718. The dark deeds of over 70 individual American malefactors, plus those of the early 20th-century's Black Hand Society and Detroit's Purple Gang, are recounted here. The 3-to-11 page entries are grouped into 10 categories, including "Terrorists," "Spies," and "Computer Criminals." Each volume opens with the same handy annotated table of contents and closes with a complete if mechanical index, e.g., the St. Valentine's Day Massacre is entered as "St." not "Saint." In between, the author carefully separates history from legend, systematically entering biographical details. Black-and-white photos, boxed sidebars, and recommended books and films are sprinkled throughout and a list for further reading is appended to each article. From Anne Bonny and Billy the Kid to Timothy McVeigh and Clifford Irving, the feats and fates of these high-profile criminals will fascinate readers.
