About the Author

Daley has over 240 publications, including clinician treatment manuals, family and client educational books, workbooks, and videotapes on recovery from alcohol and drug problems, recovery from psychiatric disorders, recovery from dual disorders, and relapse prevention. He was the first professional in the United States to publish interactive workbooks on co-occurring disorders, and one of the first to publish similar materials on recovery from addiction. Dr. Daley's treatment models and recovery materials are used in numerous substance abuse and dual diagnosis treatment programs throughout the United States and other countries. Marlatt is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and is a former president of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy. He served as a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse at the National Institute on Drug Abuse from 1996 to 2002, and served on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Subcommittee on College Drinking from 1998 to 2001.

Description: This is the therapist guide for the treatment of patients with alcohol and/or drug problems. It provides evidence-based practice and a step-by-step approach to understand and address the recovery and relapse process. The first edition was published in 1985.
Purpose: According to the authors, the guide "reviews issues in the assessment and treatment of all types of substance use disorders. It is designed to accompany the workbook of the same name. The information and recovery strategies can be used with clients who abuse or are dependent on alcohol, sedatives, tobacco, cocaine, methamphetamines, and other stimulants, heroin and other opioids, cannabis, hallucinogens, and inhalants. The guide provides clinicians with strategies for working with substance use disorders by focusing on specific issues involved in both stopping substance use and changing behaviors or lifestyle aspects that contribute to continued substance abuse."
Audience: According to the authors, this book is intended for "any professional who is working with a client with a substance use disorder." Dr. Daley is chief of Addiction Medicine Services and an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. He oversees numerous treatment and prevention programs and has written over 250 publications. Dr. Marlatt is the director of the Addictive Behaviors Research Center and professor of psychology at the University of Washington. He is renowned for his innovative theoretical and clinical work in the addictions field. Over the past two decades, he has made significant advances in developing programs for both relapse prevention and harm reduction for a range of addictive behaviors. He also has written extensively in the addictions field.
Features: The first six chapters address an overview of addictions and treatment options. The remainder of the book deals with strategies and techniques. The chapters in this guide correspond directly to the workbook. Each chapter contains the following sections: materials needed; objectives; introduction; major points and issues for discussion; and homework. The guide contains everything you need to address treatment issues and includes clinical examples on how the worksheets should be completed. But the best section is the one on major points and issues for discussion. This has everything you need to structure a therapy session, whether with individuals or with groups. The guide is easy to read and addresses all the major issues in addictions. It's like receiving supervision and guidance from the movers and shakers in the field. Both rookies and veterans will gain much from this book.
Assessment: There are so many people suffering from drug and alcohol problems, this should be must reading for all practitioners. It is full of extremely useful information from renowned experts and can be adapted to a variety of treatment settings. The authors have used evidence-based interventions as the foundation for their approach. Because of the research and information that has been published since 1985, this second edition is justified.
