Overview

Owen is a ten-year old boy who has just moved to a new town and left behind his best friend and everything familiar to him. Unable to face unpacking his room, Owen decides to explore the woods behind his new home. He is stunned to discover a dragon named Phineas. Owen soon gains the dragon’s trust and learns that Phineas has lost the ability to fly. As he struggles to find a way for the dragon to return home, Owen learns friendship can be found in unexpected places.

About the Author

Carla Mooney is the author of several books for young readers, a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. As long as she can remember, she has been in love with reading and writing. She is thrilled to see Owen and Phineas come alive in Owen and the Dragon and hopes readers will enjoy their adventure as much as she has. Carla lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband, Tom, and three children. When not reading and writing, Carla volunteers as the Pittsburgh Chapter Director for Flashes of Hope, a nonprofit organization that photographs children with cancer and other life-threatening conditions.

Owen just moved to town and has no friends. His neighbor is a girl. Yuck. He decides to go exploring and stumbles onto a cave with a dragon living inside. A real dragon! The dragon tries to scare Owen away, but Owen is just too friendly. He learns that the dragon can no longer fly until he gets the help he needs. Owen volunteers to be that helper.

This was a cute story for middle grade readers. It's a fun story about friendship and kindness. It's a quick read with not a lot of text on

Owen and the Dragon is a charming tale that combines friendship and light fantasy in a backyard adventure. The author's theme of finding friendship in unexpected places is well-developed. I enjoyed the interactions among the characters as well as Phineas the dragon's eccentric personality
