About the Author

Katharine Owen's work focuses on the genetic aetiology of diabetes in young adults, the characterisation of rare kinds of diabetes, and the development of diagnostic protocols for monogenic diabetes. She established the Young Diabetes in Oxford study, a resource of over 1200 individuals with young-onset diabetes in the Thames Valley. She is also a clinical consultant, leading the young adult and monogenic diabetes services, and is Diabetes Clinical Lead for the Oxford Academic Health Science Network. Helen Turner's main research interests are pathophysiology and management of pituitary tumours. She also runs the adult Turner's Syndrome clinic at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism as well as being the clinical lead for governance. She has an active interest in legal issues relevant to medical care. John Wass is the Professor of Endocrinology at Oxford University and was Head of the Department of Endocrinology at the Oxford Centre of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism until 2012.His research interests include all pituitary tumours, especially acromegaly, adrenal disease, angiogenesis in endocrinology, and the genetics of osteoporosis and thyroid disease. He has published extensively in both books and journals and has been president of the European Federation of Endocrine Societies and Chairman of the Society of Endocrinology. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Pituitary Society in 2017, and was awarded the Distinguished Physician of the Year Award by the American Endocrine Society in 2015.

Description: This book is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of clinical endocrinology and diabetes. It describes each disease and utilizes tables and boxes for a quick view of important lists or summaries related to these clinical conditions. This is the fourth edition. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide practical guidance on investigations and management of both common and rare conditions in a concrete format. It is helpful to have a well-organized handbook to reference when practical questions arise in practice. Each section has a similar format, which includes background, definition, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, investigations, complications, or consequences of each endocrinologic condition by organ and system specific approach (thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, reproductive, calcium and bone, pediatric, transitional, neuroendocrine). It has a separate section for treatment with extensive information that is concisely organized.
Audience: The book targets specialist trainees, foundation doctors, and consultants. It is organized in a way that specialist trainees or consultants can find answers to specific clinical questions they may have in practice. Dr. Katharine Owen and Dr. Helen Turner are currently working as consultants at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. Author Dr. John Wass is a professor of endocrinology at the University of Oxford. The book has a foreword from Dr. Steven W. J. Lamberts, past president of the European Society of Endocrinology, followed by a list of contributors currently working in the field of endocrinology in the U.K. and Ireland.
Features: This book covers generally all of clinical endocrinology ranging from organ specific categorization of the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands to system-wide bone and calcium, reproductive endocrinology, and diabetes mellitus. It further extends to cover rare genetic conditions of endocrinology and pediatric endocrinology. There is a separate section for "specific clinical situations" where the book covers some rising areas in endocrinology such as gender dysmorphia and checkpoint inhibitor related endocrinopathies. The book utilizes tables and boxes for a quick reference of clinically relevant information. These provide a reader-friendly summary of the key points and checklists in clinical practice, which trainees will especially find useful. At the end of each section of an endocrinology disorder, the book provides references or guidelines for further reading to understand and navigate the vast field of endocrinology beyond this comprehensive book. The diabetes technology section of the book could have been more resourceful. The book covers continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pumps, but very briefly. Some guidance on materials or references to look for more information on the rising areas of diabetes technology would be greatly appreciated.

This updated fourth edition holds information on upcoming treatment options for endocrinologic disorders. It also has a new appendix section for COVID-19 related endocrinologic problems suggesting several articles to reference.
