Description: This is the sixth edition of a Canadian handbook for obstetricians "in the trenches" caring for pregnant women.
Purpose: It is intended as a quick reference for those in a triage or clinic setting. The book is heavy on illustrations and straightforward language.
Audience: The audience includes students and midlevel practitioners who care for pregnant women. The book may be too simple for advanced students, and other textbooks provide more comprehensive material.
Features: The book is divided into anatomy, the stages of labor and complicated labor, which is actually cesarean section and its complications, and other issues, which dives slightly deeper into specific topics. The first thing that grabs your attention is the quality of the fine illustrations. Certainly medical students doing a rotation in obstetrics/gynecology would appreciate the easy to comprehend pictures. The text uses a simple, bulleted format. Much attention is paid to fetal lie and presentation. The section on fetal heart monitoring is accurate though a comment on category 1, 2, and 3 tracings would be appropriate, but this may be a geographical difference. The term "birth asphyxia" is outdated and should be corrected to be in line with ACOG recommendations. The vast majority of the book is written in a style that would greatly benefit those who work in obstetrical triage. The information is quick, easy to access, and easy to comprehend. There are even nice ultrasound images included.
Assessment: This quick reference manual would best be placed in an obstetrical triage setting. Medical students or nurse practitioners will welcome the helpful illustrations and the cursory mention of more complicated conditions. Advanced readers will find it lacking in detail, but for the intended audience of students, this is an excellent resource.
