Description: A book written especially for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs), this evidence-based text provides guidelines on how to assess, treat, and manage patients with acute and/or chronic pain. Case studies in each chapter help solidify the learning while clinical pearls give real-life perspective for the providers.
Purpose: According to the book, its purpose is to provide a resource for primary care clinicians to use when making decisions to treat pain in their patients. The authors state the use of the text will help providers make the hard choices that occur every day in the clinic less stressful and more effective. Overall, the authors hope to improve the pain care APRNs and PAs provide to their patients. The authors' purpose and objectives are worthy in that pain and its treatment are common problems faced by patients seen in primary care.
Audience: This book was primarily written for APRNs and PAs. However, all providers including physicians could find this text helpful. Both authors are credible experts in their fields of practice.
Features: The book consists of a table of contents, 21 chapters, and an index. Each chapter includes an introduction, definitions of key concepts, guidelines, case studies, and clinical pearls. The organization of the chapters is superb. Part I begins with foundations of pain management. Part II covers medication management, followed by essentials for safe prescribing in part III. The best section is part IV, integrative and interventional treatment therapies. Pain medication is not always the answer when treating pain. Including non-pharmaceutical approaches is key to person-centered care and the holistic care of patients.
Assessment: This first edition is a welcome sight for any APRN and PA treating pain or providing pain management. It provides step-by-step instructions with guidelines on how to assess, treat, and manage acute and chronic pain. In an online review of titles, no other current textbooks were found with a similar purpose and/or objectives.
