Description: This is a brief review of basic facts about pain management meant to help prepare candidates for pain certification examinations. It presents the information in a bulleted format in a very plain and simple manner.
Purpose: The clearly stated purpose is to help candidates pass a written examination for pain certification. This is a noble objective as very few books are available on this topic. Textbooks in this area are plentiful, but hardly helpful when a quick review is needed. By touching on all the salient points, the authors successfully achieve their objectives of producing a small book of just facts for quick review before an examination.
Audience: The book targets physicians who are sitting for examinations for pain certification or recertification. But it is also helpful for any physicians who need a quick refresher/crash course on treating a patient with a pain condition in their busy practice. All the contributors are well-known clinicians/scientists.
Features: The 80 chapters divided among six sections. The first chapter provides tips on how to prepare for the test. The second section reviews the basics of pain physiology and epidemiology as well ethics in pain and pain taxonomy. The third and fourth sections cover comprehensive patient evaluation and the complete pharmacology of pain drugs. The section on acute pain management covers regional and intravenous analgesic modalities. The last three sections cover chronic pain conditions in great detail. Interventional techniques are described one by one in these chapters. The book is quite focused on providing information for passing the tests. Each topic is covered in a brief chapter of no more than a few pages. Information is well referenced and evidence-based. Most chapters are supplemented with tables, figures, and diagrams. The book is easy to read and digest. Despite the bulleted format, there is a rhythm to the narration describing facts.
Assessment: This book successfully accomplishes its goals — it is a succinct outline of the curriculum for pain fellowship. It is not an alternative to a pain textbook, but it will go a long way in helping those close to a certification examination. The last edition was published in 2005 and much has changed in the pain world since then, necessitating this update. Compared to other books in this area, this one is more informative and practical, with more relevance for patient management, hence worthy of everyone's time and money.
