Substantially reworking his Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Wales in Cardiff, Garratt (music, National U. of Ireland-Maynooth) focuses on the reception of Renaissance church music in 19th-century Germany, particularly the works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525-94). He explains how and why the works of a 16th-century composer came to be viewed as the paradigm of church music, and assesses and interprets the relationship between his style and contemporary composition.
