About the Author

A. N. Kang (www.annakangdesign.com) is the author-illustrator of The Very Fluffy Kitty, Papillon, Papillon Goes to the Vet, and My Big Bad Monster. She grew up in a little town in South Korea, and since she was a kid, she has dealt with her own annoying monster. While she hasn't squashed the monster yet, she's learned to live with him. A. N. Kang now resides and works in New Jersey with her sassy cat, Papillon.

Papillon, a cat so fluffy he can float, gets stuck with the hiccups after swallowing a catnip toy while playing catch with his friend, the red bird he met in the previous book. Worse, the toy’s weight keeps Papillon grounded, so his human keeper, Miss Tilly, whisks him off to the vet, where he’s dejected—until an effective belch sets things right and lets Papillon show off his airborne dance moves for his fellow feline patients. Kang’s mixed-media illustrations have a lightness to match both the understated storytelling and the weightlessness of her hero. As Papillon rides home from the vet’s office in the basket of Miss Tilly’s bicycle—his paws outstretched, eyes closed in delight, and a blankie cape trailing behind him—it’s clear that he’s living his best life. PreS-Gr 2—Papillon is a light and fluffy kitty who can float in the sky like a cloud. While playing his favorite game, catch, Papillon accidentally swallows something he shouldn't. Not feeling like himself and struck with the hiccups, Papillon is taken by his owner straight away to the vet. Not only does he feel miserable but he no longer feels special because he can't float. After a particularly terrible case of hiccups, he is able to cough up the object and rediscovers his dance moves and his beautiful singing voice. Papillon leaves the vet's office feeling special and proud once more, and he is determined to continue doing what he loves most, playing catch, but this time keeping his mouth shout. The cover sets the tone for this light, humourous story, and King does not disappoint throughout. VERDICT This simple story is sure to appeal to cat lovers and maybe even those who are not so fond of the felines. Lighter-than-air Papillon has some tummy trouble.Papillon is such a fluffy kitty he can float like a cloud. He and his little red bird friend like to play with balls of yarn, and they like to practice kung fu kicks in the air; but their favorite game is catch the (toy) mouse. One day, while playing, something goes horribly wrong: Papillon swallows the toy. It gives him the hiccups…and it also makes him sink to the ground. Miss Tilly rushes him in her bicycle basket to the vet, where an X-ray reveals the problem, and Papillon has to stay overnight. There are many pretty and talented pusses at the vet. Papillon feels that he is neither and starts crying…which makes his hiccups worse. Out pops the offending mouse, enabling Papillon to impress all the other cats with his talents, and he makes new friends. Best of all, he gets to go home—where he keeps his mouth shut while playing catch. Kang's fantastically fluffy feline returns for another weightless tale. The watercolor, pen, and pencil illustrations float with Papillon across the pages. The pastel palette is perfect, and Papillon's expressions are priceless. There's not much to Papillon's sophomore outing, but little feline fans will definitely want to float along. (Picture book. 3-7)
