Description: Following the certified emergency nurse (CEN) exam blueprint, this review book has handy and innovative learning activities that can be used in a group, alone, and/or while working a slow shift. This edition has removed redundant material, uses the CEN outline as a template, puts all learning activities at the back of the book, and integrates anatomy and physiology content. It also includes access to an accompanying website.
Purpose: The purpose is to help nurses pass the CEN examination, but the book also can serve as a handy resource in a busy emergency department. The helpful drug appendix could be posted in the medication room for all to use. The website as an online course and review was not particularly helpful to me. It would be good, however, if I needed to practice testing before sitting for this difficult examination. The book and website meet the objectives because they both contain essential content to practice as a CEN.
Audience: The book is written for nurses preparing to take the CEN exam. These authors are credible authorities on the subject by academic preparation, CEN certification, and practice experience. Both authors have published other review books and journal articles.
Features: The book covers the body systems, how to prepare for the exam, and examples of specific emergencies. The best aspect of the book is the appendix with medications used in the emergency department.
Assessment: This is a good book for nurses studying for the CEN, but it also has value as a resource in busy emergency departments, for students rotating in emergency departments, and for transport personnel wanting to review emergency management content.
