About the Author

Carole Boulanger is a Consultant Nurse and Advanced Critical Care Practitioner at the Royal Devon&Exeter NHS Foundation Trust UK.  She is the recent Chair of the Nursing&AHP Committee for ESICM leading on developments of nursing and AHP activity for the society. This includes not only educational provision but also ensuring that nursing and AHP contributions continue to expand as part of the fabric of the society as this reflects the way we deliver care to our patients.  Her primary focus is on high quality care delivery across occupational boundaries and advanced clinical practice in the Critical Care setting.
Dr David McWilliams is a Consultant Physiotherapist within critical care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham which has the largest single location critical care unit in Europe. He is the chair of the physiotherapy working group for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). David was a member of the guidelinedevelopment group for the NICE guideline ‘Critical Illness rehabilitation’ and subsequent quality standard on the same topic. He has extensive experience of research into both early and post ICU rehabilitation, with a number of publications in this area and regularly presents both nationally and internationally on the subject.

Rather than focus on diseases and ICU technologies, the authors emphasize a holistic, patient centered, multidisciplinary approach as the guiding framework for care. Topics such as communication, the ICU environment, and promoting independence are addressed.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to present a passport to successful discharge of ICU patients by concentrating not on the physiological aspects of the illness and its treatment, but on patient centered holistic care that addresses the psychological and social needs of patients and their families. For example, rather than presenting the health history as a list of disease focused questions, the authors stress the importance of getting to know the patient as a person during the history and who that person was prior to the illness.

Not only is the physiologic care crucial in the journey, but the authors point out that the early establishment of a relationship with the patient and their family is key to a successful journey. The authors contend that person centered care must be the focus for every patient encounter. This holistic, patient centered approach is woven into chapter topics such as nutrition, mobility, communication, mind and body, the ICU environment, promoting independence, and the person before the patient. Each chapter provides a framework to promote holistic care and highlights that the path to recovery starts the day of admission to an ICU. The occasional use of tables and colored figures complement the information provided in the text. Each chapter contains an extensive, helpful reference list.
Assessment: Most books about critically ill patients in an ICU are organized by body systems and concentrate on the diseases common to each body system. The nursing care discussed in these types of books centers on the physiologic aspects of the illness and the technology and interventions used to treat the illness. This book offers a refreshing and much needed different approach. The authors are committed to a holistic view of care of patients in the ICU and fulfill this promise in each chapter. Rather than using a disease focused structure, the authors emphasize topics that promote person centered holistic care.
