Drs. Schachner and Hansen have produced a second edition of their 1988 two-volume text on pediatric dermatology. The editors have addressed the scientific advances since the first edition and have expanded topics such as prenatal diagnosis, AIDS, and genodermatoses. The authors have consolidated and updated information in many areas of pediatric dermatology. The first six sections of the book are thematic: basic science, immunology, psychosocial development, principles of diagnosis, principles of treatment, and surgical techniques. Although these are interesting reading, most textbook-users look up specific disorders by name and, in this book, may find a specific diagnosis represented in several sections. If texts are to remain competitive with other sources of information, redundancy must be recognized as an expensive luxury. The shortcomings of this text are the sparse 1994-1995 references and the scattered and confusing entries on a single disorder throughout. The book is valuable for the student, pediatrician, and dermatologist. The contributors are a who's who of pediatric dermatology in the United States with a good representation (9 authors) from abroad. The illustrations are good in general. Several of the illustrations are of older individuals and should be edited out of the next edition. The references are good but reflect the long lead time necessary in constructing a text. The index reflects organizational problems in the text. Disorders are described in multiple sites, which clutters the index and does not provide the best direction for the reader. This is a complete source for pediatric dermatology and as such is of immediate value to dermatologists, students,and pediatricians. Much of the 1988 edition has been updated. The wonderful chapter on basic science will be underutilized because most readers look up a disease to learn about the science, not the other way around. Is it worth buying? Yes--for all of the above stated reasons plus David Taplin's monograph on scabies. Could it have been a better text? Yes--the editors at Churchill should have been more attentive in editing redundancies.

The chapters are grouped in sections beginning with basic science and proceeding to neonatal and inherited disorders, diseases of mucous membranes and appendageal structures, the classic dermatologic reaction patterns, neoplasms and systemic diseases, infections and infestations, and injuries. This revised and updated edition (first was 1988) adds new and expanded coverage in areas including prenatal diagnosis, AIDS, genodermatoses, genetic markers for specific diseases such as ichthyosis and disorders of cornification, and the pathophysiology of eczematous, papulosquamous, vesicular, bullous, and pustular disorders.
