Description: This is an awkwardly sized (4.5 x 8 inches) handbook of pediatric ENT information with an equally awkward title. It is long, packed with information delivered in bullet points, with very few illustrations, charts, graphs, or references.
Purpose: The foreword states that this is "a valuable new educational resource for residents and fellows in training who desire a comprehensive and concise source of information with respect to the discipline of pediatric otolaryngology." However, the level of presentation is for students or interns. All beyond will require more factual information and broadly based background to fully participate in this field. The foreword also states this book may be of benefit to the rapidly expanding field of physician extenders. In that statement the foreword may be correct.
Audience: The senior author is a creditable source of information as part of the division of ENT at Seattle Children's Hospital. He has recruited six section editors with reasonable experience. The 103 individual writers from over 30 institutions throughout the country are mostly junior faculty, but not without talent or knowledge, especially for what ends up being very basic information.
Features: The book is divided into seven sections, and four cover the traditional otology, rhinology, laryngology/bronchoesophagology, head and neck surgery. All deliver the standard information in brief bullet points about which there can be little argument. The novel portions of the book appear in the introductory chapter on embryology, always a good starting point when discussing pediatric surgical problems, recapitulations of common syndromes grouped by craniofacial defects, hearing loss, or neck syndrome. The most unusual section is titled, "Evidence and Guidelines in Pediatric Otolaryngology." Here, the authors attempt to bring some order out of the voluminous and clearly contradictory chaos surrounding tympanostomy tubes, tonsillectomy, and surgery for rhinosinusitis. These three chapters tackle huge problems, produce some reasonable (and somewhat conservative) recommendations, and provide the only references in the book, but clearly cannot settle these vexing questions.
Assessment: Overall, this is a minor contribution to the ENT literature that may serve well as a quick reference for students, cross-covering interns, and physician extenders. It will not prove to be beneficial for serious students of pediatric otolaryngology.
