Purpose: The authors seek to provide a contemporary review of pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic surgery with an emphasis on the elderly. This is a useful book for anyone treating pelvic floor dysfunction and its numerous associated comorbidities. Each chapter provides a concise, up-to-date review by an expert in the field thereby incorporating a multidisciplinary approach.
Audience: This book is most useful for specialists in female urology, urogynecology, or colorectal surgery. However, it is also an excellent resource for urologists or gynecologists looking to update their knowledge about pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic surgery.
Features: The first section begins with the anatomy of the pelvis and includes beautiful colorful illustrations. Over the next six chapters, this section discusses pelvic floor physiology, principles of geriatric surgery, and UTIs and catheter-associated UTIs. The next section thoroughly explains how to diagnose pelvic floor dysfunction. This includes a comprehensive review of urodynamic tracings, radiographs, and anorectal manometry with actual pictures and descriptions. The next section is a state-of-the-art review of the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and interstitial cystitis. It also includes a novel chapter on the use of sacral neuromodulation to treat IC. The last two sections focus on pelvic floor dysfunction from a urogynecologic and colorectal viewpoint, respectively.
Assessment: This is a well-written and extremely up-to-date book that looks very specifically and uniquely at the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction in the elderly. Although it is mostly relevant to surgeons treating chronic pelvic pain, prolapse, and bowel and bladder incontinence, it is an excellent resource for any urologist or gynecologist.
