About the Author

Dr Ashraf Badawi is currently an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences, Cairo University, Egypt. In 2007, he received a PhD degree in Laser Applications in Dermatology from the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences, Cairo University, Egypt; and in 2011 he obtained a second PhD in Clinical Medical Sciences from Szeged University, Hungary. He has taken active roles in over 250 International Dermatology conferences providing both lectures and workshops. Furthermore, he has taken an active role in the training of 2500 dermatologists worldwide for laser applications in dermatology. Dr Badawi has a number of international publications in the field of cosmetic dermatology and laser applications in dermatology.

Description: Periorbital rejuvenation is a common aesthetic concern of patients. Understanding the mechanisms that can contribute to a complaint such as "dark circles under the eyes" allows you to choose the treatments that will be most effective. The discussions on anatomy and how to evaluate patients are excellent. There are many color anatomical diagrams illustrating why targeting a particular muscle with a neuromodulator gives a desired result and also how complications may occur if practitioners do not know the anatomy.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists on how to perform rejuvenation procedures correctly for the periorbital area.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists, novices and experienced alike.
Features: The chapter on neuromodulators is very well written. It explains the various patterns of frowning, how to determine which groups of hyperactive muscles are involved, and where to precisely inject. The text is accompanied by clinical photos of individuals grimacing. The photos are marked with red dots indicating placement of injections. I would enjoy seeing an expanded section on cosmeceuticals.
Assessment: This is a worthwhile reference for those working in cosmetic practices. The author does a great job correlating aging changes in anatomy to what is observed clinically. Understanding these concepts also makes a dermatologist more capable in explaining these dynamics to patients so they can comprehend the rationale of dermatologist recommendations. This book is on my "to-buy" list.
