Weaving together a number of disparate themes relating to Holocaust perpetrators, this book shows how Nazi Germany propelled a vast number of Europeans to try to re-engineer the population base of the continent through mass murder.

A comprehensive introductory essay, along with a detailed chronology, reference entries, primary sources, images, and a bibliography provide crucial information that readers need in order to understand Hitler's plan, as carried out through legislation and armed violence. The book also demonstrates that both within Nazi Germany, and in other parts of Europe, all sectors of society played a role in planning, facilitating, and executing the Final Solution.

In addition to entries on nearly 150 perpetrators, the book includes 25 primary source documents, ranging from government memoranda to first-hand observations of Nazi killing activities to field reports from senior officers on the scene of Holocaust killing sites. Also included are excerpts from literary memoirs. Students and researchers will find these documents to be fascinating statements as well as excellent source material for further research.

About the Author

Paul R. Bartrop, PhD, is a multi-award-winning Holocaust and genocide scholar and professor of history and director of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, Florida.

Eve E. Grimm is an Australian lawyer with advanced qualifications in law. She has worked in government service as a senior attorney, and written about the German legal profession during the Nazi period and the Holocaust.

Gr 9 Up—Genocide scholar and history professor Bartrop and lawyer and Holocaust consultant Grimm have produced a companion volume to Bartrop's Resisting the Holocaust. Like the earlier volume, this work focuses on sampling a range of perpetrators rather than examining the worst offenders. Without analyzing specific individuals' motives or judging the nature of their guilt, the book succinctly summarizes the careers of almost 150 out of the thousands responsible for the Shoah. Brief contextualizing information precedes, and commentary follows, each of the 25 primary source documents (from Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Rudolf Höss, and others). There is a chronology (1919–46), an extensive bibliography, cross-referencing, and two dozen informatively captioned black-and-white photos. Even condensed accounts of the perpetrators' childhoods convey a sense of the interwar Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler, and the anti-Semitism rampant from Egypt to Latvia. Some of those profiled here were executed; others evaded justice, served brief sentences, led prosperous (sometimes anonymous) lives, and died free. VERDICT While disheartening, this volume reminds readers how people were complicit in the extermination of fellow humans. All high school libraries should consider its acquisition.—Patricia D.
