Description: This new book attempts to relate pharmacodynamics, defined as what the drug does to the body, to the process of new drug development. The book is divided into three parts; the first part is an overview of pharmacodynamics, the second is its application to selected drug classes, and the third is the application of pharmacodynamics at the receptor level.
Purpose: The stated purpose is the compilation of the underlying principles of pharmacodynamics and their application in new drug development.
Audience: This book is aimed at clinical pharmacologists and scientists involved in new drug development. It may be of wider interest because it also covers areas like the application of minimal data to a patient population and the application of pharmacodynamics in the regulatory process of new drug development.
Features: The authors are about equally divided between academia and industry. The book is illustrated with graphs and figures; however these are minimal with some duplication among the graphs. This is an up-to-date book with large, current, bibliographies at the end of each chapter and a very adequate index at the end of the book.
Assessment: This is an up-to-date book in a field which needs more information. As the ability to measure the pharmacodynamic effects of drugs in the body increases, this field will become more and more important to the scientist. This book provides not only the theoretical background but also the clinical application of these principles to new drug development. This is a worthy addition to the libraries of scientists interested in pharmacodynamics, and I hope that as more information becomes available, there will be further editions of this book.
