About the Author

Janie B. Butts is a retired Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she taught classroom and online nursing courses at the doctoral, master’s, and baccalaureate levels. Courses included ethics, legal issues, advanced theory, advanced practice issues, professional development, research, and professional nursing practice. Dr. Butts served in the capacity of Consultant Editor from 2008 to 2014 for Nursing Ethics journal, which is an international journal. Current specific research interests include death and dying ethical issues. Dr. Butts has two books published with Dr. Rich: one is Nursing Ethics: Across the Curriculum and Into Practice (4th edition) and the other one is Philosophies and Theories for Advanced Nursing Practice (2nd edition). Dr. Butts’ journal articles and book chapters include topics on ethics, her research, theory, education, and professional issues. She reviews for nursing journals. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with an emphasis in nursing education and nursing science, and her master’s degree is from the University of Mississippi at the Medical Center, Jackson, with an emphasis in adult health nursing and nursing management.

Karen L. Rich is a retiredAssociate Professor at The University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing in Long Beach, Mississippi, where she taughtpopulation-focused nursing, law and ethics, professional development, and leadership. Dr. Rich’s doctoral degree in nursing with an emphasis in ethics is from The University of Southern Mississippi. She has a master’s in public health nursing from Louisiana State University and a post-master’s in psychiatric–mental health nursing, nurse practitioner emphasis, from The University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Rich serves as a Consultant Editor for the international Nursing Ethics journal. She serves on the ethics committee of a large county hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Dr. Rich has written a number of articles and book chapters about ethics and philosophy. Her special interests are communitarian ethics, virtue ethics, ethics in public health, Eastern philosophy and ethics, and ethics in nursing education and leadership.

Description: This book offers a foundational history and knowledge of nursing science, as well as an overview of major nursing theories and models. It is a resource for advanced practice nurses to use these theories and models in practice and to ponder the underpinnings of their practice from a philosophical view.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a resource for those in advanced nursing practice and students in graduate programs.
Audience: The authors note that the book is geared toward students in nursing graduate programs (DNP, PhD, Master's) and those currently in an advanced practice role. There is an emphasis on the DNP role, with little mention of PhD or master's students, whose use of philosophy and theory may differ. The editors are both faculty, with an emphasis on ethics. They have selected knowledgeable chapter authors.
Features: The book is divided into five parts ranging from foundations of philosophy and theory to tools for integrating and disseminating knowledge. Some chapters include better applications for advanced practice than others, such as specific cultural assessment questions in chapter 23 relating to cultural theories. There are minimal web links as resources, although chapter 16 has helpful resource links about quality improvement agencies. Chapters vary in depth and quantity of theories. Some extensively cover the theories with many references and examples (such as chapter 12), while others are very brief and could use more depth. There is mention of ethics throughout, but, although this is an underpinning to practice, it seems a bit tangential as noted along with theories. Each chapter is unique. Each has a summary and questions, but the specific purpose for each chapter does not follow a consistent format. The writing style is also different for each chapter, with some in a conversational or story telling style and others very academic. Most chapters have few or no figures or tables to break up the small font and complex content.
Assessment: Updates in this edition include theories focused on health equity and health disparities (chapter 17) or added theories about recovery-oriented care as a result of national needs and trends (chapter 12). Overall, the book is, as the authors state, a resource for those who want to learn more about philosophy and theory. Part 1 offers an excellent foundation for understanding philosophy and theory. The book discusses most of the key theories/models, some more in depth than others. It could have paid more attention to the nuances of grand, middle range, and practice-specific theories, since the latter two are more relevant to advanced practice nurses.
