In the fourth of the six Palliser novels, Phineas Finn returns to London and the House of Commons after the death of his Irish wife. Though he survives an attempt on his life by the jealous and half-crazed Robert Kennedy, his involvement in this ugly scandal damages his reputation. The final disenchantment comes with his trial for the murder of the hated Mr. Bonteen. By choice, Phineas never again enters the charmed inner circle of power.
