It is clinically focused and concisely written, with excellent use of tables.
Purpose: The content is derived primarily from the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing, 4th edition, Ferrell et al. (Oxford University Press, 2015). The purpose of this book, as well as the series, is to provide hospice and palliative care nurses with quick reference guides to each of the key domains of palliative care. As the field of palliative care continues to grow, nurses need easy access to evidence-based information. This book and series meet these important objectives in a variety of ways.
Audience: The audience is nurses caring for people with serious illness. The most obvious audience is nurses working in the field of palliative care, but the book also would be a useful resource for non-palliative care nurses working in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long term care, and outpatient clinics. This is an easy-to-use reference tool for experienced nurses, as well as a teaching tool for students and novice nurses. It is appropriate for nurses practicing at all levels, including practical/vocational nurses, registered nurses, and advanced practice nurses. The editors are experts in the field of palliative nursing.
Features: The symptoms this volume focuses on are those commonly experienced by people with advanced serious illness, such as fatigue, anorexia, pressure ulcers and other skin disorders, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The size of the book makes it easy to carry and accessible to nurses working in a variety of settings. The tables provide succinct, evidence-based information that is easy to read. Outside of the tables, the print is small and condensed, which might be difficult to read for some.
Assessment: Although this book does not contain new information on symptom assessment and management, it does provide it in a format specific to nurses. This book, as well as the series, is written and edited by nursing experts for nurses, which makes it unique and exciting. It also provides abbreviated content from the well-written main textbook.
