Description: This is the seventh edition of a question-and-answer test preparation book on physical diagnosis skills for medical students. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to help medical students prepare for the USMLE steps 1 and 2 examinations. The questions, combined with the explanations in the answers, give clear instruction on the basics that every medical student must understand to continue through clinical rotations.
Audience: The audience is by definition American medical students preparing for the examinations, but there is definite benefit for other physician assistant and nurse practitioner students as well. I would add that there is utility for every medical school faculty member to review in designing their teaching goals for the students.
Features: The book is composed of 500 questions with the explanations for how to understand the rationale behind the answer. General references refer to the current standard texts of physical diagnosis, medicine, and pediatrics. The one limitation is the use of black-and-white photographs that do not reproduce very well.
Assessment: For the intended audience, this is a high value preparation book.
