Description: This book presents a series of interactive case discussions aimed at preparing board-eligible physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) graduates for the oral board examination. It starts with a brief introduction about the structure of the oral board examination. It then provides oral board examination cases organized by field within PM&R (e.g., Complex Medical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine). The cases are structured to match the flow of the actual board examination. There is a case prompt followed by a series of questions as would be expected on exam day. The questions are on one page and answers on a subsequent page to afford learners the opportunity to practice on their own or with a colleague. Each question within a case has an associated icon to reflect the domain of the examination being covered. With purchase of the print book, one also gains access to an online version of the text. This is a second edition. The first edition was published in 2017.
Purpose: This book is intended as a board review workbook to be used in preparation for the physical medicine and rehabilitation oral board examination. The examination is unique and best prepared for by practicing. As such, this book is a necessary study tool as it allows readers to practice running through cases in all fields of PM&R either alone or with a colleague just as can be expected on exam day. Both the print and online material facilitate this objective. The print book has all questions on one page with all answers on a subsequent page. The online version has all questions listed with an option to click a button after each question to reveal the answer to that specific question. The online material also has an interactive glossary and hyperlinks for the resources at the end of each case. Both print and online versions are conducive to effective practice.
Audience: The primary audience is individuals preparing for the physical medicine and rehabilitation oral board examination. The author also suggests other audiences within the field of PM&R who may find the book helpful. For example, residency program directors and faculty may find the cases useful for bedside and didactic instruction; those preparing for maintenance of certification may use the book while studying; and practicing clinicians may use the vignettes to hone skills in patient populations they see less frequently. The book certainly meets the need of those preparing for the oral board examination as it allows opportunity to practice for the exam. The authors of each chapter are credible authorities on their respective subjects. Some are subspecialists within the field of PM&R, while others have extensive experience and are recognized experts on the topics.
Features: The title of the book adequately describes the purpose of the book (PM&R oral board review) as well as the fact that the book includes interactive case discussions. The table of contents lists the fields within PM&R that are covered as well as the authors of those sections. While not every topic within each field of PM&R is covered, the book does a good job of including all fields. The content of the cases is variable in quality. Some cases are clear, succinct, and well written. Others have typos, are not clearly written, or have contradictory content from other cases. The answers also vary in their thoroughness, which makes it difficult to know what would be an adequate, passing response for the examination. The format of the cases allows for effective practice. The icons next to each question representing the associated domain of the examination help to reinforce the structure of the examination and maintain organization. There is a list of abbreviations as well as an index at the end of the book. The index in the book is not available on the website; however, there is a search field on the website that allows navigation to a section by keyword.
Assessment: Overall, this book is an effective and necessary resource for all individuals preparing for the PM&R oral board examination. While the cases vary in quality and content, all fields within PM&R are represented, and the interactive format allows readers to practice for exam day. To my knowledge, this is the only book available that facilitates practice for the physical medicine and rehabilitation oral board examination.
