She is also the Monika and Henry Betts Medical Student Education Chair at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, Illinois.

Sarah Hwang, MD is Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Residency Program Director at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also the Director of Women’s Health Rehabilitation at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, Illinois.

Description: This book summarizes the breadth of subfields within physical medicine and rehabilitation. It provides an overview of the specialty as well as sections on medical, neurologic, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. This fourth edition updates the previous version, which was published in 2017, and includes new and emerging fields in the specialty, such as post-COVID rehabilitation.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide an accessible resource on all subfields of physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is a worthy objective, as the scope of the field is broad and would require multiple detailed and dense resources for a comprehensive review. The book meets the objective of offering a condensed resource on a broad number of topics.
Audience: The book targets physical medicine and rehabilitation practitioners and trainees. It is aimed at resident trainees, although is written in a way that is appropriate for both medical students and practicing attending physicians as well. The authors primarily include subspecialists who focus on their specific areas of interest, as well as many resident and fellow contributors. While this improves the accessibility of the book, it may compromise some credible authority.
Features: The book covers medical, neurologic, and musculoskeletal topics in physical medicine and rehabilitation. It does an excellent job of addressing every type of pathology that may be encountered in a systematic manner. Each chapter summarizes the approach for a given condition, including the history, physical exam, assessment, and treatment. The book provides an appropriate number of references, although the specific references can only be viewed in the online format. Some of the chapters include useful illustrations.
Assessment: This book is likely the best pocketsize comprehensive reference that summarizes all subfields within physical medicine and rehabilitation. It is most applicable as a clinical practice/rounding reference. The book is not a substitute for a board review text such as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review, 4th Edition, Cuccurullo (Springer, 2019). Additionally, the level of detail is extremely condensed; for example, the chapters on traumatic brain injury and concussion in this book are only 14 pages long, compared to Brain Injury Medicine Practice and Principles, 3rd Edition, Zasler et al. (Springer, 2021), which is over 1000 pages long. However, this is within the scope of the objectives of the book, as it is meant to serve as a reference for practitioners and not a comprehensive review. The book offers a great overview of many topics with an appropriate level of detail for the expressed purpose. The updated edition is justified as it includes sections on emerging fields such as ultrasound, pelvic rehabilitation, and post-COVID rehabilitation.
