Overview

The Fourth Edition of Dr. Gopal B. Saha’s Physics and Radiobiology of Nuclear Medicine was prompted by the need to provide up-to-date information to keep pace with the perpetual growth and improvement in the instrumentation and techniques employed in nuclear medicine since the last edition published in 2006. Like previous editions, the book is intended for radiology and nuclear medicine residents to prepare for the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, American Board of Radiology, and American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine examinations, all of which require a strong physics background. Additionally, the book will serve as a textbook on nuclear medicine physics for nuclear medicine technologists taking the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board examination.

The Fourth Edition includes new or expanded sections and information for:

* PET/MR, including the attenuation correction method and its quality control tests;
* accreditation of nuclear medicine and PET facilities;

This is an introductory text on the physics that for the basis for the clinical practice of nuclear medicine. It is a second edition; the first edition was published in 1993. The purpose is to introduce the reader to the physics of nuclear medicine. Each year, a new group of physician-residents and technologists prepare for certification in nuclear medicine. This book is intended principally for them and it will serve well as an introductory text for these individuals. The book is intended principally for resident physicians and technologists in nuclear medicine. It also will be helpful to residents in radiology who are required to have a cursory understanding of nuclear medicine. Finally, beginning graduate students in medical physics will find the book helpful in gaining an overview of the physics of nuclear medicine. The basic principles of the physics of nuclear medicine are covered in this book. The title is somewhat misleading, because it suggests that radiobiology receives equal coverage to physics in the text. In actuality, the only radiobiology in the book is a chapter presented to set the stage for discussion of radiation risks and protection standards. There is no coverage of radiobiology at the cellular and molecular levels. The physics chapters in the book are succinct and well-presented. An excellent index is provided, and each chapter has suggested readings, and questions and problems with answers in the appendix. This book is an excellent introduction to the physics of nuclear medicine. Contrary to the title, there is little coverage of radiobiology. Radiology and nuclear medicine physician-residents will gain a solid understanding of an essential part oftheir training with this book. It also will be helpful to technologists studying for certification in nuclear medicine, and to beginning graduate students in medical physics.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide a review for residents in radiology and nuclear medicine in preparation for board certification exams of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine and the American Board of Radiology. It is also intended to help nuclear medicine technologists prepare for the exams of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, and also for the Nuclear Medicine Technology exam of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The book easily meets these worthwhile objectives.
Audience: It is written for residents in nuclear medicine and radiology, and for nuclear medicine technology students. Fellows in nuclear radiology would also benefit from this book.
Features: The book covers the basics of atomic structure, radioactive decay, interaction of radiation with matter, production of radionuclides and various aspects of instrumentation. It also covers introductory radiobiology and includes a chapter on radiation protection and regulations pertinent to nuclear medicine. As in previous editions, the clarity of the presentation is a strong point of the book. There is a useful glossary of terms. Each chapter has questions and problems, and the answers are provided. Updated material is included for SPECT/CT, PET/CT, PET/MR, and radiation dosimetry. A number of the references still date from the 1970s and 1980s, but some new references have been included.
Assessment: This is a useful reference for residents and fellows, as well as nuclear medicine technology students, preparing for written certification exams. This update is appropriate due to the advances in the field. Its major competition is The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging, 3rd edition, Bushberg et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012), and Physics in Nuclear Medicine, 4th edition, Cherry et al. (Elsevier, 2012).
