Description: The emphasis of this book is on normal and abnormal cardiac electrophysiology, including the pharmacological treatment of arrhythmias. Other topics addressed are cardiac muscle contraction, coronary blood flow, and cardiac failure.
Purpose: The authors' objective is to provide a concise integrative presentation of the physiology and pharmacology of the heart.
Audience: The authors view their reading audience as undergraduate physiology students, medical students, clinicians, and researchers.
Features: The principal feature of this book is the extensive use of figures with limited didactic commentary.
Assessment: The quality of the figures is very good in general; however, the figures dealing with voltage clamp data are difficult to interpret because of insufficient explanation in the accompanying legends. The numerous histology figures also do not contribute significantly to the authors' objectives. The limited number of references, most of which are books or reviews, limits their usefulness for the researcher. The goal of providing a concise textbook results in the reader needing significant background knowledge, particularly in the area of cardiac electrophysiology. Consequently, the book's usefulness for undergraduate and first-year medical students is questionable. However, the authors are to be commended for developing a book for the individual desiring to review normal and abnormal electrophysiology and the treatment of the latter.
