MARILYN L. MILLER is Professor Emeritus, Department of Library and Information Studies, School of Education, the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She is former president of the AASL and has received numerous awards for LIS service.

Virginia Kirkus is remembered primarily as the creator of Kirkus Reviews, but how many librarians today know that she was the editor who acquired Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" series? Seeking to redress the lack of representation in library history and biography, Miller (LIS, Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro) has compiled more than 90 biographical essays that celebrate the contributions of the early leaders in children's library services-librarians, book editors, and reviewers.
