Description: The editors have produced a powerful source of knowledge that is easy to use and quite satisfying. Their book ushers readers through 52 plastic surgery cases and details the logical manner in which to objectively evaluate, ponder, and solve problems that each presents.
Purpose: The editors conceive this book as a tool to explore the world of plastic surgery by presenting a host of clinically relevant scenarios that may be encountered in a plastic surgery practice. They then proceed to lay out a coherent and concise method readers can use to arrive at a sound diagnosis and then formulate a treatment scheme to achieve the desired outcome.
Audience: The recognized experts who contribute to this book have translated complex subjects into an erudite syllabus that can be read and understood by a multitude of readers in plastic surgery, including students, residents, and recently trained and veteran plastic surgeons.
Features: The book begins with the complicated world of congenital lesions of the face. Subsequent chapters cover head, neck, trunk, extremities, and cosmetic concerns in a similar manner. Each of the 52 cases opens with a question and high quality photographs of the problem or pathology. A lifelike photo draws the reader into the clinical situation which, upon turning the page, is followed by an overview of the potential diagnoses. Questions relating to the history of the problem and what to look for in a physical exam assist in discerning the next logical step to formulate a plan of action. Further evaluative tests are discussed and a treatment protocol is launched. A management algorithm for each case succinctly highlights the various paths to bring the case to an acceptable outcome. Each section concludes with a few words of wisdom or "practical pearls" that should have been garnered from the case.
Assessment: Reading this book is an enjoyable experience. How much better can learning be than to have fun, test one's clinical acumen, and take away a fund of knowledge?
