By ufe and indufiry they acquired fuch a command of their horfes, and fuch a readinefs and exaélnefs in their' various motions and evolutions whether performed fe parately or together, that the whole number feemed like a tingle body, aétuated by an internal voluntary princi ple. In the great battle which they fought with the fetolians and Eleans by the river Lariffus, Damophantus, General of the Elean horfe, fingled out Philopoemen, and ran full fpeed at him. Philopoemen prevented him, and with a violent blow of hisl'pear threw him dead upon the ground. As foon as he fell the enemy fled imme diately. And now phiiopoemen was univerfally celebra ted as a man who 1n perfonal valour. Yielded not to the youngefi, nor to the oldeft 1n good conduft, and who was equally qualified to fight and to command.
