Description: This book provides a brief yet thorough overview of almost all topics related to nephrology.
Purpose: The book contains individual topics that are comprehensively written to make important clinical information readily available to providers in order to facilitate evidence-based patient care.
Audience: This book is a very good resource for residents and nephrology fellows. It can be immensely helpful especially during the rounds to quickly review any topic. With a wide variety of topics, it covers almost everything one might come across at bedside.
Features: This reference book is divided into two big sections. The first part discusses the general approach to the most common renal disorders. The second section explores specific categories including electrolytes and acid-base disorders, tubular diseases, interstitial and cystic diseases, extra-renal, glomerular and vascular diseases, hypertension, renal replacement therapy, and transplantation. It also includes overlap of nephrology with other specialties, which I personally have found very helpful - for example, various ocular or dermatological manifestations of different renal disorders. Toward the end, the book also has pictures of urine sediments and commonly seen pathological findings seen on kidney biopsy. Each chapter is divided into sections, clearly demarcated by sub-sections, and includes helpful tables and figures.
Assessment: This book is designed to be used as a reference for providers at bedside. It includes different approaches to examine various disorders, giving a very good, well-rounded overview. It contains numerous figures and algorithms that make the topics easy to understand. With its clear layout, the book is likely best suited for the residents and trainees of nephrology. It would benefit from an electronic version that could be updated, as well as a resource for some of the dynamic images and key points that could be used in a learning center. Overall, I find the book to be a good resource and I would recommend trainees have it in their white coat.
